The Client
GSK employs 600 people at its soft drinks manufacturing plant in Coleford, Gloucestershire. It operates a fleet of 21 HFT and Nissan fork lift trucks, leased on five-year agreements. Typical operating hours are approximately 4000.
The Problem
A high number of potholes and areas of rough terrain across the site had the potential to damage vehicles and, more importantly, cause injuries to personnel.
The Solution
After carefully analysing traffic movements and the client’s shock incident record, Davis Derby supplied and fitted the Fleet Management Information System (FMIS), including the shock indication module to seven of the trucks and a diesel pump. Drivers were issued with SMART cards which allow access to and record logged-on and operational time on the vehicles.
The Results
GSK’s primary reason for purchasing the system was to improve health and safety across the plant. According to Malcolm Peates, Warehouse Shift Manager however, the business is also seeing fewer shock levels being recorded as potholes and other hazards are now identified through the daily shock reports.
As well as creating a safer working environment for GSK’s drivers, this will have the effect of prolonging the life of the vehicles and external components such as hubs and tyres. GSK also expects to see lost hours caused by back injuries reduced.
FMIS and the shock module are also proving valuable in supporting disciplinary procedures.
What The Client Said
“The Davis Derby FMIS is highly effective as a health and safety tool. It has also contributed in identifying training needs among our drivers. Most importantly the backup and support provided by Davis Derby is first rate” Malcolm Peates, Warehouse Shift Manager, GSK.
